Grade your college on feeding celiac students
C
Explain your rationale for that grade
They are inconsistent with marking whether items are gf or not. Also their gf section is just bread and a toaster. No separate peanut butter containers or the like. Things that can be easily made gf are not.
Check all that apply
My school is small and has only a few dining halls, I can find some but not enough food in any of the dining halls, I can't find any good options in the dining halls at all, Ability to eat well was a critical part of my college selection process, I asked alot of questions before I came but the reality was different
Did you register with your students disabilities office for accommodations? If yes, describe.
No
Are there resources (nutritionists, chefs, peer support groups) to help ensure you are receiving safe nutritious food? Describe
No
How many times have you been glutenized in your dining hall?
3
If you didn't select NONE, what happened and how did school respond?
I threw up several times. I asked about the fries because they were marked gf but made me sick. Chef told me they would put in a dedicated fryer over break, but they didnt. Now they are not marked gf.
Describe your biggest celiac challenge at college and how you manage it
I have difficulty getting enough calories from the dining hall. I usually just buy food for my room to supplement.
If you were in charge of your school's dining, what changes would you implement to better feed celiac students? Would your school be open to these suggestions?
I would consistently mark gf products and have separate peanut butter/butter containers. I would supply more protein dense products in the gf fridge. They are open to these things but have not followed up when I've asked.
Did celiac impact your housing decision? How? Is there a certain dorm you recommend for celiacs? Why?
Yes. My senior dorm I picked because it has a kitchen.
Your advice to new celiac kids for managing the dining halls? Favorite dining hall(s)?
Bring your own food.
Your advice to new celiac kids for eating in the dorm? Favorite snacks? Places that deliver?
Yogurt, cheese, nuts, nutrition bars, protein shakes, pasta, sandwich bread
Your advice to new celiac kids on preparing before they come? Or doing upon first arrival?
Register with the Office of Disabilities
Your advice to new celiac kids on managing keg parties and alcohol scene?
Didn't experience this. I would say don't drink it if you didn't see it being poured from the bottle.
Grade your college town area for celiac friendliness
B
Favorite places to eat in town or foodshop?
Tomasino's, booyah burgers, weis markets
Anything else you would like to add?
Not enough people know or understand the disorder and its severity. But also that it is super easy to modify current recipes to make them gf without sacrificing taste or whatever they think.
