Does your college handle food restrictions as you expected they would when you selected your school?
Mostly what I expected
Check all boxes that apply to your college experience
My school has only a few dining halls, Ability to feed me is fairly consistent across dining halls, I feel safe eating at any dining hall on campus, Ability to eat well was a critical part of my college selection process, I asked alot of questions before I came but the reality was different
Have you had a reaction from eating in your dining hall?
NO
Please describe your meal plan for each year there so far. Include if your school required any of these decisions. If you are eating in a greek house or other club type arrangement include that as well.
I have a 15 meal per week plan and I don’t even use that many meals per week
Did you register your food restrictions with your students disabilities office for accommodations? If yes, describe.
I did, I’m able to change my meal plan anytime and not have one if that is what I wanted
Are there resources (nutritionists, chefs, peer support groups) to help ensure you are receiving safe nutritious food? If yes, describe.
There was one but they quit, they are still finding a replacement
If you were in charge of your school's dining, what changes would you implement to better feed students with your food restrictions? Would your school be open to these suggestions?
I would separate the vegan and gluten free sections because they are not the same thing. I would also add gluten wraps into the sandwich station as an option and more prepackaged salads without croutons. They added wraps last year and they recently added gluten free pizza as well.
Describe your biggest challenge with managing your food restrictions at college and how you deal with it
If don't like any of the options at the dining hall that night I go back to my dorm and eat a microwave meal that I purchase at the store. Annie’s Mac cheese is yummy or gluten free chicken nuggets.
Did your food restrictions impact your housing decision? How? Is there a certain dorm you recommend for those with food restrictions? Why?
I don’t think so. I am able to have a toast oven and air fryer because of the celiac since there’s a kitchen in my dorm which I can’t use due to cross contamination.
What's your advice for managing the dining halls with your food restrictions? Favorite dining hall(s)? Any dining halls to avoid?
Starbucks has gluten free bagels and a separate toaster. Naz has typical hot foods, 2 protein choices, 2 starch choices, and 2 vegetable choices
What's your advice for eating in the dorm with your food restrictions? Favorite snacks? Places that deliver?
Amy’s frozen Mac and cheese, applegate frozen chicken nuggets, any frozen meal that can be made in the microwave. Make pancakes and soups at home, freeze them and bring them back to microwave
What do you recommend new students with food restrictions do before school starts? Or when they first arrive?
Bring more food than they think into the dorm, whatever they don’t eat a roommate will probably eat or can donate it to a food bank. Make an appointment with the new head of dining when there is one to discuss options.
What's your advice on managing the party scene with your food restrictions?
Know what drinks have gluten and don’t before getting there.
Grade your college town area for feeding people with your food restrictions
A
Explain your grade. What are your favorite places to eat in town or foodshop?
Bunch of surrounding places have gf options. Little pizza heaven and calorussos have gf pizza and pasta. Red Robbin gf buns and dedicated fryer, Henry on clays has gf bun and a bunch more
Anything else you would like to add?
Finding gf food isn’t difficult, the quality of the food here is just different then a home cooked meal like I’m used to.
