Details About this Student's College Dining Experience
Does your college handle food restrictions as you expected when you decided to attend?
Mostly what I expected
Have you had a reation from eating in your dining hall?
NO
If Yes, describe each incident and how your school responded
Did you register your food restriction with the disabilities office? If yes, describe
Yes, created a loose diet plan for me
Are there resources to help with nutritious, safe dining (e.g. dietician)? If yes, describe
Yes there’s a dietician, but it’s still rigid in terms of options
If you were in charge of dining, what would you change? Would your school be open to suggestions?
Gluten free sections of kitchens, easy to implement varieties (brown rice pasta, gf pizza, rice noodles instead of egg noodles etc)
Describe your biggest challenge managing your food restrictions at college and how you deal with it
Living in the dorms, I found myself spending money and not being to use my meal plan solely because the gluten free friendly cafe would be closed on weekends or the Caf (main dining hall) would not have any open options except for cereal.
Advice for Incoming Students:
Housing:
Did your food restrictions impact your housing decisions? Any dorm recommendations
Yes, I prefer living off campus if there’s an off campus option because I can cook my own food. Berklee lets you live off campus even as an incoming student
Dining Halls:
Any advice for managing dining halls? Favorite dining halls? Any to avoid?
My favorite is Cafe 939, it’s open to the public also but they are extremely sweet about making sure you feel comfortable eating and your allergy requirements are taken care of
Meal Plans:
Describe your meal plans over the year(s). What's mandatory? Any suggestions?
Dorms:
Any advice for eating in the dorms? Favorite snacks? Places that deliver?
Microwaveable food is always great! Trader Joe’s usually has some great options!
Getting Started:
What should students do before school starts or when they first arrive?
Talk to accessibility resources/dietitian about available options, eases the stress of eating on campus
Socializing:
Advice on managing parties or dinners out with friends?
I usually eat beforehand, or my friends will be extra sure it is a restaurant that has options for me!
